I need to get out of the house. A surprise appendectomy has had me stuck at home for three weeks. It's time to head to my home town of Hayward, Wisconsin, for the American Birkebeiner. The Birki is the second largest cross country ski race in North America. It runs 34 miles from Cable to Hayward.

DESTINATION: HAYWARD WISCONSIN
DURATION:    WEEKEND GETAWAY
DOLLAR$:     $65.00

What would a local do?
  1. Stay at the Chip-wa Motel or, in my case, mom & dad's cottage.
  2. Get up and have a mocha at The Hayward Coffee Company.
  3. Find a spot on Main Street to cheer on the skiers. The first  place skier will finish in just under 2 hours!  Make sure    you have your cowbell to ring.
  4. Spend a sunny afternoon ice fishing. An out of state fishing license is only $10 for the day. My brother supplied the equipment.
  5. Stop at Coop's Pizza for a Mexican Hero Sandwich.
